USP Canaan Release Outcomes
United States Penitentiary Canaan is in Wayne County, but the Federal Bureau of Prisons operates it. County Corrections and the Wayne County Sheriff do not control its person records or confirm a federal discharge. The federal status must be read in the context of BOP custody, any federal sentence, and any receiving authority.
A BOP result marked Released or Not in BOP Custody establishes that BOP is no longer the custodian. It does not by itself end federal supervised release, a state or local sentence, immigration custody, or another detainer. In Transit means custody continues during movement. Placement at a Residential Reentry Center is a transitional federal stage and should not be described automatically as unrestricted community release.

Confirm a USP Canaan Release
The BOP Inmate Locator is the primary public person-search route. Its published scope generally includes federal inmate records from 1982 forward. A federal identifier offers the clearest match, but the name search can work when the number is unknown. Read every result field rather than using presence or absence alone.
- Search by BOP register number when available. The locator also accepts DCDC, FBI, or INS identifiers.
- For a name search, enter the name and use optional age, race, and sex fields to separate people with similar names.
- Compare the register number, location or status, and release date. Treat In Transit and a named custodial placement as continued federal custody.

A date in the future is an estimate produced from federal calculations, not a guarantee of the prison gate event.
A historical release date can be useful evidence, especially when paired with a Released status. Yet the result should be matched to the correct person through the register number and identity fields. The date also should be compared with the federal sentencing docket if the question includes a later court order or continuing federal supervised release. Supervised release is a court-ordered period after confinement and is not shown merely by saying BOP custody ended.

A release-record question should identify the person by full name and register number, give the time span, and name the existing record sought. The location or status record, calculation record, movement record, and release record are different items. Asking for a defined record is more precise than asking BOP to explain everything that happened after a date.
Wayne County agencies cannot supply a federal discharge record merely because the prison lies within the county. USP Canaan Pretrial Limits
Not every person in federal custody is a sentenced BOP prisoner. The United States Marshals Service manages federal pretrial detention and prisoner movement into BOP custody. A defendant may stay in a contract state or local facility while awaiting a federal court result. That person may not yet have the kind of sentenced BOP record expected from a USP Canaan search.
If the person was a USMS detainee, use the federal docket to identify the actual holding facility and read the detention, release, acquittal, sentencing, or commitment order. The USMS prisoner information describes that federal role, while a narrow USMS FOIA request can seek an existing movement or release record subject to exemptions. USMS does not offer a broad historical public person locator comparable to BOP's service.
Absence from the BOP locator can therefore mean the person never entered sentenced BOP custody, remains in pretrial custody, falls outside the published period or scope, or was searched with mismatched details. It is not a release test by itself. The actual holding agency and court record must establish the event.
USP Canaan Detainer Transfers
A federal release date does not override another authority's legal hold. If BOP releases a person to a state, county, or immigration authority, BOP custody ends while custody continues under the recipient. The federal movement or release record and the receiving authority's record must be read together. A generic Not in BOP Custody label does not disclose the whole later path.
When a record expressly names an immigration transfer, the ICE Online Detainee Locator can be checked for current custody. ICE data can lag, and a no-result cannot separate release, transfer, removal, an excluded record, a spelling error, or processing delay. No official ICE detention facility or detention contract in Wayne County was substantiated in the research, so an ICE branch applies only when a real record supplies it.
The same caution applies to state or local holds. Follow the named receiving agency and compare dates. The federal court record can establish the sentence and later supervision, while the BOP result establishes BOP status. A receiving-agency record is needed to say what occurred after transfer. Separate detainers can affect where the person goes when BOP custody ends. For that reason, verify the location or status close to the expected event and check the docket or receiving authority if the practical destination matters.
For a completed event, preserve the register number, exact status wording, release date, and retrieval date. If those fields conflict with the expected federal sentence, request the existing agency record rather than estimating from the sentence headline. That creates a clear trail from USP Canaan custody to the later federal or receiving-agency status.
